Radiant Barrier for Garage Door | Florida Homes Energy Savings

What is a Radiant Barrier?

A radiant barrier is a type of building material designed to reduce heat transfer by reflecting radiant heat rather than absorbing it. It is commonly installed in attics or roofs to improve energy efficiency by lowering cooling costs.

How Does a Radiant Barrier Work?

  • Radiant heat travels in straight lines and heats anything solid that absorbs its energy.

  • A radiant barrier is made of a highly reflective material, typically aluminum foil.

  • When installed in an attic, it reflects radiant heat from the sun away from the living space, keeping your home cooler.

Benefits of Radiant Barriers:

  • Energy savings: Reduces cooling costs, especially in hot climates.

  • Improved comfort: Helps maintain lower indoor temperatures.

  • Compatibility: Can be installed with existing insulation to boost overall performance.

  • Durability: Resistant to moisture and doesn’t degrade like some insulation.

Common Applications:

  • Attic ceilings or rafters

  • Roof decking

  • Walls and floors in some cases

Important Notes:

  • Radiant barriers work best in hot climates with significant cooling needs.

  • They are less effective in colder climates where heat loss is mostly conductive/convection.

  • Proper installation (facing an air space) is key to their effectiveness.

Radiant Barrier for Garage Door

A radiant barrier is a effective and simple means of helping to reduce the heat that enters a house.  The Radiant barrier can be installed up in a attic to help keep out some heat.  It can also be installed on a garage door for a very effective means of keeping the garage cooler.

Installation is simple.  Double stick adhesives or another means can be used.  Its possible the panels may just slide and tuck under the doors metal aluminum frame.

This is something that I wish I did many years ago.  It has been great at keeping the temperature down and with a two story house its keeping the garage heat that rises out of my second floor.
